Reflection Upon reflecting this class, I’ve realized several things. Overall, Methodology really helps educators understand, the backgrounds, thinking processes, teaching techniques and much more in order to help educators prepare themselves to teach ELL students. I believe educator’s need this guide because it’s very important for them to prepare themselves on how to appropriately and successfully educate ELL students. In the past, I was not fully aware of all of these things and had no idea that there was this much to consider for these students. I also realize how important it is to get to know you students and acknowledge the diversity of your classroom. Wright states in the textbook that, “knowing a student’s ethnicity and country of origin, for example, allows the teacher to incorporate appropriate multicultural education strategies and techniques into the classroom,” (2015, pg.16-17). In this video, I was given the opportunity to interview my mentor teacher Mrs. Ortiz. I feel so grateful for this opportunity because it gives me a chance to get to know her better and her experience with ELL students. Although it’s not clearly stated in the video, my mentor teacher knows Spanish and English. Despite being bilingual, the class she is currently teaching is not a bilingual classroom. Instead, her classroom has ELL students and in this interview we get an idea of how it works. When it comes to aiding the ELL students individually, my mentor teacher has an aid that collaborates with her and helps instruct with the ELL students. The aid comes in the classroom at certain times to pull aside the ELL students and perform individual instruction. Before the aid pulls the student aside, she collaborates with my mentor teacher to see what the needs are for the student. In this video, I am interviewing my boyfriend who speaks English as a second language and is originally from Mexico. Thanks to this interview, I learned a few things about him that I didn’t know about before which was great. This interview also gave him the chance to remember some things from the past. Coming to the untied states at such a young age would be difficult for anyone especially learning a second language. Despite that, he was able to adapt quickly and learn the language within a year or two. In the interview, he explains that he believes that it would be a struggle for others to learn the language if their teacher did not incorporate the students native language somehow in the classroom. Wright states, “ effective content-are instruction in ELLs’ home language requires a certified bilingual teacher who is fully proficient in that language and English,” (2015, pg.91).
